SHARE: Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe

SHARE is a panel survey,  which focuses on European populations aged 50 years and over. Its principal aim is to create a rich database, combining information from several important areas of life of this growing part of the European Population. The data are available to the international research community online. The project relies on cooperation of a large group of scientists including demographers, epidemiologists, economists, psychologists and sociologists aiming to understand the complex the relationships between health, financial situation, labour market activity, retirement decisions and family situation. Results of analysis based on the SHARE data paint a very interesting picture of the ageing Europe. What is more, from its start the SHARE project has gradually expanded by the inclusion of new countries (unfortunately some countries have withdrawn from the project in the meantime - mainly due to lack of sufficient financial resources).

In 2006 the twelve countries which participated in the first wave of the survey were joined by three new SHARE members – the Czech Republic, Ireland, and Poland. At the same time the data was also collected for the second time in the initial 12 countries. All countries which participated in wave 2 of the project (with exception of Israel) conducted a life-history survey in 2008-2009 (SHARELIFE). This time the questionnaire was significantly different from the one used in the previous waves and focused on life histories of the respondents, including childhood, employment and health history. In wave 4 of the survey (2011-2012) Estonia, Hungary, Portugal and Slovenia joined the project. Luksembourg joined for wave 5 in 2013 and Croatia joined in 2015 for wave 6. In 2017 wave 7 will be conducted, covering 25 member states of the European Union (except of the Netherlands, Ireland and Great Britain), Israel and Switzerland. Between waves 1 and 6 120 000 respondents 50+ were interviewed in the whole Europe. Poland took part in waves 2, 3, 4 and 6, collecting information from altogether 3 000 Polish respondents 50+.

At European level the SHARE project is coordinated by the Munich Research Institute for the Economics of Aging (MEA). Since wave 2 in Poland  survey is managed by the Centre for Economic Analysis CenEA.
